The Store 4 is a precision data instrument for the acquisition and retention of scientific data, Designed for fixed or mobile use it can record on four frequency modulated channels, using 6.25 mm (1/4 inch) magnetic tape. It is of superb design and with the included documentation it can be maintained easily. The instrument has been tested thoroughly and functions exactly as the factory specs describe. Output/Input signals were verified with oscilloscope displays. This unit was originally built by a UK company for use by Lockheed Electronics, USA. The electronic and mechanical design is state of the art even when compared to to-days standards. The recorder drive mechanism can handle tape with 35 to 18 micro-meter thickness (long, double or triple play) and accept spools up to 220 mm (8-3/4 inch) diameter. The recorder is capable of continuous recording for nearly eighteen hours when the four channels are accessed directly. Employing the bi-directional mode, and using single track recording it is possible to record up to seventy-one hours. This mode can be controlled with simple external TTL control circuitry. Seven recording speed are provided, from 15/16 to 60 ips. They are selected by a rotary switch, Speed is servo controlled by means of a tone wheel. Noise due recorded tape flutter can be reduced during playback by using the integrated flutter compensation circuit. One reference track must be reserved during recording. Flutter compensation is only really effective at 15/16 and 1-7/8 ips tape speed. Both Record Input and Replay Output signals may be monitored by means of the signal monitor meter. Signal calibration can be done with the tape stopped when the E-E mode bypasses the heads. Channel 4 may be used for voice annotation via the supplied microphone. Four Input/Output Connectors are visible at the front.
