The National Weather Service (NWS) in Key West, Monroe County Emergency Management (MCEM) and the community of Ocean Reef have worked together to install a HANDAR 555 Data Collection Platform (DCP) to measure weather conditions at Ocean Reef. This will provide the NWS with consistent, hourly weather observations around the clock from Ocean Reef. The NWS in Key West receives hourly observations from the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) equipment located at the Key West and Marathon Airports for the lower and middle Keys. Surface weather observations are very important in the forecast and verification process.
The name, HANDAR, came from the name of the manufacturer but it is now manufactured by VAISALA. At this time, only one HANDAR 555 DCP is operational (Ocean Reef) but there are plans to install 3 more across the Keys, one in Duck Key, one in Big Pine Key, and one in Summerland Key. The Summerland Key site is approximately 90% complete.
The HANDAR 555 DCP is an automated observing platform (much like ASOS) which can be configured to use a variety of sensors to suit the needs of the user. The NWS has the one in Ocean Reef configured to observe weather data such as atmospheric pressure, temperature dew point, wind direction and speed and rainfall. The Ocean Reef DCP uses a phone line for interrogation and plans are to use a satellite uplink in the near future for all the sites. At the NWS office in Key West, a PC is used to call the Ocean Reef data sensor and ingest the observation. It is forwarded to the local information display system for processing and displayed in an international coded format. Instrument Catalogue

Fixed Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS)
Vaisala Inc. Handar Business Unit
The Vaisala RAWS station is used by natural resource management agencies to enhance and protect forestland. Installed in remote areas, the weather data collected - wind speed and direction, humidity, temperature, barometric pressure, solar radiation and fuel moisture and temperature - is of crucial importance in recognizing where forest fires are likely to occur.

Information on the operating environment: (such as: Possible extreme values in temperature, humidity, wind, or suitable for operation under other severe weather conditions [e.g. icing, sand storm, air pollution, etc.])
RAWS stations are located in harsh, remote locations where forests and land is susceptible to the occurrence lightning storms and fires. Satellite telemetry is frequently used as land lines are not available. Fuel moisture sensor measures a key parameter for determining the potential for fire hazard.
Experiences obtained and other information
Intercomparisons and tests performed:
Intercomparison tests performed on AWS sensors by government agencies -U.S. National Weather Service, Bureau of Land Management, NASA, INPE - Brazil Space Agency and others. DCP is evaluated by Bureau of Land Management.
